Alfred James Bailey was born in Soham on 25th February 1923 (Newmarket Q2-1923 3B:779), baptised in Soham on 11th April 1923, son of Elliot George and Ada BAILEY (née GRIGGS) of Qua Fen Common, Soham.

In the 1939 register,at 110 Downfields, Soham were his father George BAILEY [9-5-1893] general labourer; his mother Ada [31-7-1895]; brother Rodney Frederick [14-2-1929]; sister Sheila Edna [26-7-1934] later Mrs COLLEN). There are 4 closed records.


it has so far proved impossible to find any service details for this man. Around the time of his death 260 squadron was disbanded and transferred its aircraft to 250 Squadron, in Lavariano, Italy. It was at this time also that the aircraft were being changed from Kittyhawks to Mustangs.

Whether he died in an accident or from illness is not known, it clearly was not enemy action so long after VE Day.
